Supporting Truth and Reconciliation in Alberta Schools

Alberta and GPCSD proudly support the national commitment to advance the 94 Calls to Action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

As part of Alberta’s K–12 Program of Studies, all students will engage in learning about Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives. These teachings—delivered through classroom instruction and special presentations—explore themes of truth and reconciliation and are embedded across grade levels and subjects. Our schools are deeply committed to fostering respectful understanding and dialogue. These lessons are essential to building a shared future of healing and trust.

This important work is also reflected in Alberta’s Teaching Quality Standard (TQS), specifically Competency #5, which requires all teachers to ensure that students develop a foundational knowledge of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit experiences, cultures, and contributions. To support our teachers in this work, the division has a wonderful team of Indigenous Liaisons, who work with our students throughout the year to deliver a vast variety of cultural teachings and presentations. Our schools also benefit from Indigenous cultural presentations from a variety of community presenters, ranging from Elders and Knowledge Keepers to traditional dancers and numerous other cultural advisors.

We share this information to keep parents informed that these teachings will occur throughout the school year, and we strongly encourage families to join us on this journey of Truth and Reconciliation by attending any of the many Indigenous cultural and awareness events offered in Grande Prairie and surrounding communities throughout the year.

“Remember, reconciliation is yours to achieve. We owe it to each other to build a Canada based on our shared future, a future of healing and trust.”

The Honourable Murray Sinclair
